Focus & Awareness: The Invisible Forces of Achievement
Let me tell you, these are not only powerful skill sets but twin forces that transform potential into achievement. They direct the full power of your consciousness toward what matters most while remaining deeply attuned to the subtle currents of opportunity and insight surrounding you.
The Critical Mindset for High Performance
On the journey of success and self-actualisation, you'll need to become more resilient to distraction, make better decisions, defeat self-sabotaging behaviour, and stay calm under pressure when everything around you is burning down.
How do we do this, you ask?
Training the focus and awareness skill set is one of the key pillars in mental performance that I coach. Even the most talented individuals struggle to convert their potential into consistent results without mastering this foundational skill.
Understanding Focus & Awareness:
Focus is your ability to precisely lock in on the task at hand, cutting through the noise of modern life.
Awareness is the ability to recognise when you deviate and refocus on your goal—your internal GPS recalibrating.
Here is a perfect example from my coaching practice:
You plan to get a workout in when you wake up; you had a long day the night before. The minute you wake up, you get sidetracked from the workout you've mentally planned and end up busy checking emails, losing your present-moment focus.
Thirty minutes have passed, and you decide to bin the workout and continue with emails.
In this example, the focus is on your ability to zero in on your planned, committed task: your workout!
Awareness is the ability to RECOGNISE when anything that prevents us from completing a goal creeps in (in this example, this person did a terrible job of being aware of the distraction).
We can go deeper with this example by referring to my last motivation and commitment article.
When a person consistently doesn't follow through on tasks conducive to their goals, this often comes down to a lack of commitment. If you can't make the actions and habits around your goals stick, refer back to the tools and strategies I've mapped out.
And I will stress—no one, not even elite performers, can be focused 100% of the time; this is where awareness comes in—and there is a TON of untapped potential in the awareness muscle that most people never develop.
Assessing Your Focus & Awareness Skills: Where Do You Stand?
So, where do you land on the focus and awareness scale?
Here is a quick temperature check to measure how well you do on the scale
Those with low levels of focus and awareness:
Tend to fall apart when pressure builds, and this manifests in a multitude of ways: constantly letting one mistake (missing a workout, eating something not consistent with their goals) spiral into a series of negative decisions that drag on days, sometimes weeks, even derailing entirely from the initial goals one set. There's also a tendency to self-sabotage the closer they reach a goal—as if success itself becomes threatening.
Allow outside influences to dictate energy/focus; work commitments take over, social pressure, one day they are locked in, the next they are distracted with anything and everything.
They tend to focus on things outside their control and blame outside influences (others' opinions/expectations, circumstances, etc.) for their lack of success. The victimhood mindset becomes their default.
On the other end of the scale, those with high levels of focus and awareness
Stick to their commitments as non-negotiables and show up whether they feel like it or not because they are committed to the process, not the fleeting emotion of motivation.
They show up, bringing energy and focus to their health, energy routines, and other key habits despite what is happening in other areas of their lives.
They can consistently recognise when negative self-talk, others’ opinions/expectations, self-sabotaging behaviour, etc., kick in and then refocus on what will help them succeed at the task. Their awareness works like an early warning system.
Recognise—and focus on—what THEY can control. They spend exactly zero energy on things outside their sphere of influence.
Why Focus and Awareness Matter: The Hidden Performance Advantage
In coaching, I've discovered that perfection doesn’t exist. Instead, consistent progress through imperfect action exists.
We live in an era where 99% of people are measuring themselves against future ideals, where they think they should be, people's highlight reels on social media, the perfect body, the perfect relationship, the perfect career—the list is endless.
Unfortunately, this keeps people stuck in the gap of lack. They’re always looking at where they aren’t rather than building from where they are.
Stuck in this gap is the worst place to be, as it distracts people from their present-moment focus.
All we can control is the NOW, the moment-to-moment decisions and choices we make today.
Focus, awareness of where our feet are, and making the next decision and choice conducive to our goals and commitments are key. This isn't just philosophy—it's practical psychology that delivers results.
And guess what? The reality is you are going to be caught up in less-than-ideal situations:
There will be times when you are highly stressed and tired, and making decisions that align with your goals will be the last thing you want to do. Your focus and awareness skills will be tested under fire.
There'll be friends, colleagues, and family piling pressure on you to "miss that workout", "come on, have a few drinks", and "Why are you eating that food?" "Come on, you've got to live a little."
There will be adversity and a TON of distractions paving the path to success; those who rise to the level of their goals do so because they've developed a skill set that allows them to overcome the challenges and trials they've faced. The obstacles become the way, not roadblocks to be avoided.
You, too, can develop the skill set needed to display a highly trained level of present-moment focus and awareness so you can perform consistently, navigate adversity and distractions that will come your way, and reach your goals. I've seen it happen with countless clients I've coached—ordinary people achieving extraordinary results through these principles.
Like leadership, you get the focus, awareness, and performance you train. If you lack in this department, it's time to build this skill set. Make a commitment. Focus determines your whole future.
Practical Strategies to Enhance Your Focus & Awareness: Tools That Work
Strategy One for Focus: Today + Today + Today = Your Goal
A key component in present-moment focus is understanding that the only thing we can truly control is RIGHT NOW.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift—that's why we call it the present. (Yes, it's a bit cliché, but clichés become clichés because they hold profound truth).
The time is always NOW, and the place is always HERE.
One of the biggest challenges in life is developing an appreciation for the value of the NOW, the present moment, and then effectively channelling one's performance focus into the moment. Most people either dwell in the past or anxiously anticipate the future—both states that rob you of your power.
Achieving a big, arduous goal or milestone over the long haul can be overwhelming. The magnitude of what you're attempting can create mental paralysis.
Transforming your body over a 6-12 month period when looking through the telescope can feel demotivating to some. "Six months of clean eating? Impossible!" is the typical response.
The only thing that really matters is your FOCUS on the next best step, the behaviours and decisions you make right now—this moment, this choice, this action.
Practical Exercise:
As part of your morning routine, I invite you to spend 5 minutes upon waking and writing down:
"My one-sentence focus for today is:
Then, write the three main actions and commitments you'll make that day conducive to your goals. Be specific about when, where, and how you'll complete these actions.
I’ve seen this simple power tool change lives, including my own. The magic isn't in knowing it—it's in consistently implementing it.
Strategy Two for Awareness: Know Your Signal Lights
Signal lights are an incredibly powerful concept for awareness. Using a traffic light analogy, they have transformed my clients' ability to self-regulate.
The easiest way to think of your signal lights:
Green light = You're in complete control. You're giving yourself the best chance for success. Your decisions are aligned with your values and goals.
Yellow light = You are losing control. You are starting to lose the focus and mentality to achieve optimal performance. The warning signs are flashing, and you're beginning to drift.
Red light = You are out of control and self-sabotaging in many ways. You're in reactive mode, making decisions that actively undermine your progress.
By using this tool to identify your signal lights in various situations, you can raise awareness of 5 key areas and pave the way for improvements. This awareness separates those who make lasting changes from those who remain stuck.
Know Your Signal Lights Assessment:
Now, let's get practical and do a quick exercise; grab a piece of paper and create a table with five rows down and four columns across.
Down the five rows, mark:
Body Language (How do you carry yourself? What's your posture like?)
Focus (What's the quality of your attention? Scattered or laser-focused?)
Self-talk (What's the nature and tone of your internal dialogue?)
Physical feelings (What sensations are present in your body?)
Situations (what specific situations put you in a green, yellow, or red light state)
Now, along the top 3 columns, mark:
Green lights
Yellow lights
Red lights
Now, spend a few minutes describing what it's like to be in green, yellow, or red light states in these five key areas. Be brutally honest with yourself—this isn't for anyone else to see.
Performance awareness is similar to driving a car on the road; you control yourself when you have a green light (positive, confident thoughts and feelings). Your actions are deliberate and aligned with your intentions.
When you encounter yellow lights (hopeful, uncertain, vague, and timid thoughts and feelings), when something negative happens, you shift from a green light mentality to a yellow light. This is normal—but it's what you do next that counts.
If your yellow lights are not recognised, and the cause of that adversity is not addressed, you will often find yourself in a red light state (negative, destructive thoughts and feelings). The downward spiral gains momentum, and you’re miles off course before you know it.
When intentionally used in daily life, this tool can completely change the trajectory of your day in a positive, productive way. It aligns your actions and behaviours with your goals and targets, putting you back in the driver's seat of your own life.
Final Thoughts: The Path Forward
Remember, mastering focus and awareness isn't about perfection—it's about consistently recognising when you've drifted and bringing yourself back to what matters. This skill set is trainable, and with deliberate practice using the strategies above, you'll develop the mental fortitude needed to navigate distractions, overcome adversity, and achieve your most ambitious goals.
Your commitment to present-moment awareness and focused action today will compound into extraordinary results over time. Trust the process; master the moment!
