The Power5 Method: Why Successful Men EXECUTE When Others Quit
I am a MASSIVE advocate of the idea that you can ONLY CONTROL THE CONTROLLABLE because anything that is simply out of our locus of control isn't something we can directly impact. Yes, we can influence and guide, but not completely control, so we shouldn't waste valuable time, energy, and attention on such things.
As a coach for nearly 15 years, this is probably one of the most frustrating things: the battle I face getting clients to do the mundane tasks necessary to reach their goals. More importantly, on days they don't feel like it and feel like throwing in the towel, reverting to old behaviours and habits that keep them stuck.
This is hard. Because it's something entirely out of my control, yet I know it's a massive factor in the success of the people I work with.
But the GOOD NEWS is that you can develop a specific skill set that will build more of the staying power to SHOW UP CONSISTENTLY daily, following through and EXECUTING THE PLAN of attack you've set for yourself, being your goals and vision of your future self.
Enter: The Process Over Outcome Skillset
A process over outcome mentality is the ability to STAY FOCUSED ON THE JOURNEY without getting too caught up in the destination.
In pursuing goal achievement and chasing that vision of your future self, the PROCESS is ALL of the little steps, the moment-to-moment decisions and actions REQUIRED to reach your goal:
Writing down your daily goals
Tracking optimal habits (Power5, as I call these)
Planned eating
Training programme
Movement
The outcome is on the opposite pole: dropping that 10-15kg of body fat and building that shape and physique you envision, having a daily schedule that allows you to lead yourself with vitality, energy, and confidence so you can thrive for the long game, and being able to show up with presence and purpose for your family every day. This is the goal.
The only way to do this is to be dedicated to the process, be where your feet are, and take the next best action and step conducive to your goals and future vision.
Why Is The Process-Over-Outcome Skillset So Important?
By committing to a process over an outcome, we redirect our focus to what is within our inner locus of control (discipline, motivation, organisation, to name a few) and drive the actions needed to achieve the desired outcome.
Commitment to the process is a crucial skill that needs to be developed to execute the plan consistently, with or without the "feeling" of motivation.
Many people get confused about this, thinking it's impossible to develop or that it's some inherent character trait you're born with. The truth: it's an ability, a skill like everything else that, when worked on and practised well, can bring incredible results across all areas of one's life.
For example, if you desire to write a book, your process isn't to just write when you feel inspired. It's to become a writer—the kind of person who writes daily, regardless of your motivation, and is focused on improving your craft.
This is the mentality you must have with any of your goals.
Ask yourself:
Who is the type of person I must become to achieve the goal? What do I need to start doing and stop doing every day? What's the daily process of behaviours and habits I must adopt?
This is where consistency truly is king.
Striving to show up and perform at a high level, consistently holding ourselves to high standards. We want to make positive choices that support our goals while avoiding negative decisions, rejecting all that isn't aligned with that future vision.
It's being aware to focus on the present moment and bring yourself back when you feel yourself drifting. Of course, this is the process; it's taking the next best step, one by one, and consistently executing the plan.
Strategies and Tools
The foundation of a process-over-outcome mentality is controlling what you can control. It's relentlessly focusing on what you can control and letting go of what you can't as quickly as possible!
In all honesty, if you were to take one big insight from the past six articles I've put together so far, it would be this:
GET CLARITY ON CONTROLLING WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL
To LEVEL UP, improve your performance and ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS, you MUST learn to differentiate between what you CAN and CAN'T control. This is HUGE—nothing zaps a person's time, energy and attention MORE than focusing on the uncontrollables.
An excellent exercise I recommend is to grab a piece of paper, draw a line down it, write on one side "CAN CONTROL" and the other side "CAN'T CONTROL", and start making a list.
The only things you can truly control are YOURSELF:
Attitude
Appearance (body language)
Positive self-talk
Present moment focus
Process and preparation
Performance - how you show up
Perspective - how you see your situation
Effort
Energy
Emotional self
The Power5 Non-Negotiable Tool
The Power5 Non-Negotiables Tool is incredible for developing the process over outcome skillset. I use it with every client, and it’s a non-negotiable process all my guys follow.
In a nutshell, we create 3-5 daily actions that one must commit to performing without exception, regardless of circumstances. These aren't simply "to-dos" but strategic performance drivers that:
Create immediate energy returns rather than depleting resources
Require minimal time but deliver disproportionate results
Address root causes of performance barriers, not just symptoms
Create compound benefits when performed consistently
Through years of conditioning, most people fall into the trap of obsession over the end goal. Adopting the simple Power5 into your day-to-day schedule helps you recondition and focus on executing the daily tasks and checkpoints that will lead to success instead of just thinking about "someday."
When you eliminate the decision fatigue of "What To Do" and have a Power5 list of the top 3-5 habits/behaviours you need to execute, the struggles with inconsistency and compliance suddenly start to fade away. You’re becoming the person you need to become through your actions, habits, and behaviours.
To follow through, you must be clear on your goals and committed once you are; this tool changes the game!
How Do We Create a List of the Power5 Non-Negotiables?
For a busy executive, the typical Power5 elements might include:
A 10-minute morning movement protocol
A strategic food timing pattern (not a restrictive diet)
A recovery technique performed between high-stakes meetings
A cognitive reset ritual to transition between work modes
A sleep preparation sequence to maximise overnight recovery
By focusing on just a few yet high-impact daily tasks, we reduce the likelihood of overwhelm while providing concrete, measurable progress.
To clarify, identify 3-5 things that will have the biggest impact on your performance/goal achievement, write them down clearly, and give 100% of your focus to checking these off every day, aiming for at least 80% consistency.
Remember: It's not about being perfect; it's about being consistent. The power is in the process, not the outcome. Master the process, and the outcome will take care of itself.
Your Decision Point: Choose Today or Surrender Tomorrow
Ask yourself this: What would your life look like 12 months from now if you MASTERED the process and FORGOT about the outcome?
Every morning when you wake up, you face a FUNDAMENTAL choice:
Will you be the person who EXECUTES the process regardless of how you feel?
Or will you be the person who SURRENDERS to their feelings and keeps living the same year over and over again?
Here's the brutal truth that most aren't willing to face: Your FUTURE SELF is being created by the decisions you make TODAY. Not tomorrow. Not next Monday. TODAY.
The gap between where you are and where you want to be isn't about knowledge—you ALREADY KNOW what to do. It's about EXECUTION and CONSISTENCY.
So I'll leave you with this challenge:
Take 10 minutes RIGHT NOW to write down your Power5 Non-Negotiables. The 3-5 actions that, if done CONSISTENTLY, would TRANSFORM your life over the next 90 days.
Then commit to them for just ONE WEEK. Not because they'll change your life in seven days, but because they'll prove what's POSSIBLE when you focus on the process.
The choice is yours. What kind of person will you decide to be today?
🔋 Switch ON - Wake Up.🚨
